Treating People, not Labels
After I graduated in 1989 with a Masters Degree in Social Work, I studied with Dr. Neil Lamper, in Michigan. Early in my work, I asked for his advice. It went something like this:
I said, "She's 42 years old, has post-traumatic stress disorder, a history of manic depression, suicide ideation with a moderate degree of agoraphobia and some oppositional tendencies. What should I do?" Dr. Lamper stared at me, leaned forward with a grin on his face, and said, "I wouldn't give her so many unresolvable labels."
That was one of the most inspiring moments that shaped my work: define peoples' problems using resolvable words, and help them recognize that their problems are resolvable. People get stuck in their ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving.
"Judith is one of the few professionals I know who uses both heart and head in her work, sometimes together, and sometimes, appropriately, separately. Lucky Clients!"
